Meetings & ToursPNW Annual Meeting | Chapter Meetings | Other Meetings of Interest 2008 PNW Annual Fall Meeting and Workshop October 2-3, 2008 In many areas of the Province the ingrowth of conifers into traditional rangelands has occurred. The reduced use of fire as a tool and the early suppression of lighting strikes has contributed to the ingrowth significantly. Fire is but one tool in managing sites for ecosystem restoration. This tour will examine various tools utilized in ecosystem restoration along with accounts of the details and experiences of those involved. Over the last decade a ferocious Mountain Pine Beetle attack of the Lodgepole pine has occurred from the Chilcolton and Central Cariboo to the Kamloops Okanagan areas. Large scale continuous clear cut harvesting occurred to salvage the attacked timber stands. The ensuing large openings exposed areas to grazing pressures and significant difficulties for ranchers to manage their rangelands. Major salvage logging occurred through a variety of tenures with various silviculture obligations. Seeding was carried out to deal with erosion condition, weed prevention and forage management for livestock grazed areas. You are invited to attend the 2008 PNW Section of the Society for Range Management’s Fall Meeting and Tour to experience first hand the impact of and ecosystem restoration on particular sites and rehabilitation following the Mountain Pine Beetle storm. You tour will start with a session of talks explaining the extent and impact of the Ecosystem Restoration (ER) over 5 major areas. Speakers will discuss the impact from several perspectives including pre and post ER, various options and tools in formulating prescriptions. Following the inside session we will tour five of the major ER areas and view first hand the results of ER on the sites and the impact of Mountain Pine Beetle on forests and salvage harvesting, first nations values, range impacts, and aesthetic values.
